A hiring surge tells the Fed the economy can handle tighter money, so it revives the odds of a rate hike at the September 16 meeting, and stocks slipped while yields rose. Look at the week whole and the whiplash is almost funny: Monday's hike fear, Thursday's relief on one Fed comment, Friday's hot number flipping it back, all on an economy that barely changed. I do not rebuild a plan around a single Friday. A strong job market is good for the people in it, and that is worth more than an afternoon of red on a screen.From WashingtonTwo tax breaks a lot of older filers leave on the tableWith year-end planning season near, two deductions are worth knowing. Anyone 65 or older already gets a larger standard deduction, an extra $2,050 for a single filer or $1,650 per qualifying spouse on a joint return. On top of that, a newer law adds [a temporary $6,000 deduction per person age 65 and up](https://www.cnbc.com/select/new-6k-tax-deduction-for-seniors/?ref=keep-and-grow.ghost.io), running through 2028, that phases out above $75,000 of income for singles and $150,000 for couples.Neither one requires itemizing, and together they can quietly shave a real amount off a tax bill. The catch is that you have to be sure your return actually applies them, because software and preparers do not always flag the newer break. I spent thirty-five years watching people overpay for missing a line they qualified for. It is worth an hour with your numbers before the year closes.
