| | Above the FoldThe job market cracked, and the story changedThe September jobs report, out this morning, was soft almost everywhere you looked. Employers added just 29,000 positions, roughly a third of what forecasters expected, the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2 percent, and revisions quietly erased 60,000 jobs from the prior two months. Wages grew 3.0 percent over the year, the slowest pace since 2021\. After weeks of fretting that the economy ran too hot and prices too stubborn, Wall Street woke up to the opposite fear, a labor market losing its footing, and stocks and bond yields spent the day trying to decide how to feel about it.![](https://nilxzluobwagqrepqi.b-cdn.net/1cf2a75c-b721-4674-b03f-0b4861052830.jpg)A weak jobs report is a double-edged thing. For anyone still working, or helping a grown child who is, a cooling market is unwelcome, fewer openings and thinner raises. For the markets it reads differently, because weakness pulls rate cuts closer, which is the odd reason stocks can perk up on a gloomy number. I will not cheer a softer job market, because real people live inside it. What I will say is that this is exactly the moment a cash cushion and low fixed costs earn their keep, so a slower economy becomes something you watch from steady ground rather than something that knocks on the door.From WashingtonCollecting Social Security and still working? Know this lineA softer job market has more people piecing together part-time or contract work, and that runs straight into a rule worth knowing cold. If you claim Social Security before your full retirement age and keep earning, there is a ceiling. For 2026 it is $24,480, and above it the government withholds one dollar of benefits for every two dollars you earn. In the year you actually reach full retirement age the limit jumps to $65,160 with a gentler one-for-three reduction, and from the month you hit that age the limit disappears for good.Two things trip people up. Only earned money counts, a paycheck or self-employment income, so an IRA withdrawal, a dividend, or a capital gain will not reduce your benefit. And the withheld money is not lost: once you reach full retirement age, Social Security recalculates and lifts your monthly check to pay it back over time. I had clients fret over a withheld payment every single year, certain it was gone, when all they had done was lend it to themselves. Neuralink, the brain-implant company, now has more than twenty people living with its chip, in the United States and, newly, in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the UAE. One study aims to let people paralyzed by spinal injury or ALS move a cursor or a robotic arm by thought alone. Another is trying to turn thought back into speech for those who have lost the ability. The first patient, paralyzed from the shoulders down, reportedly moves a cursor faster than some of the engineers who built the thing.Watching someone locked inside a still body reach out and touch the world again is the sort of news that shrinks a hard week. I hope it works, broadly and soon. The money note is the one I always add. Neuralink is privately held, the public companies in this young field trade on dreams and lurch on a single trial result, and two dozen patients is a medical milestone, not a mass-market business.
