The Nasdaq closed at another record, up more than a percent on the strength of the big technology names, with Nvidia touching a fresh high, and the S&P 500 added two thirds of a percent. In the same session the 10-year Treasury yield climbed again, to about 5.31 percent, near levels last seen more than two decades ago, and the dollar pushed to a 52-week high. The stock market says the future is bright. The stock market is a mood, excitable and quick to forget. The bond market is a cold sum about what it costs to borrow, and it is the one quietly setting your mortgage rate, your car loan, and the interest the government pays on its enormous debt. A record on the Nasdaq is a fine thing to read over coffee. A 10-year yield near a two-decade high is the number that actually lands in a household budget. If I had to pick which market to believe about my own money, I would lean toward the one that is harder to excite.From WashingtonThe tax form you were dreading isn't coming after allIf you sell odds and ends online, or take payment through an app like Venmo or PayPal, you may remember the alarm about a new tax form landing for anyone who cleared just a few hundred dollars. That change has been undone. For 2026, Congress put the 1099-K reporting threshold back where it long sat, at [more than $20,000 and over 200 transactions](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/understanding-your-form-1099-k?ref=keep-and-grow.ghost.io), so the feared $600 trigger is gone and most casual sellers will get no form at all.Two things are worth keeping straight, because the form and the tax are different animals. Not getting a 1099-K does not make money untaxed, because a real profit on something you bought low and flipped high is still income, form or no form. And the other side is where people quietly overpay, since selling your own used furniture or a bike at a loss was never taxable to begin with, even when an app reports the payment. I spent years untangling returns where someone had paid tax on a garage-sale table they sold for less than they gave for it. Keep a plain record of what you paid and what you sold it for, and the rest sorts itself out. Not one AI-designed drug has won approval yet, Phase 2 is still a long road from a pharmacy shelf, and the public companies in this field trade on dreams and jump on a single trial readout. Monday's headline says the Nasdaq hit a high. That is true, and it changes nothing you have to do today. The market that touches your actual money, the one setting the rate on a mortgage or a car loan, barely made the headline at all.The thing I learned slowly, and wish I had learned faster, is that the loud market and the quiet market pull your attention in opposite directions. Stocks are built to grab it, with records and red days and breathless coverage all day long. The costs that decide how much of a paycheck survives the month, the interest, the fees, the slow drip of inflation, make almost no noise at all. Across thirty-five years the households that came out ahead were the ones who turned the volume down on the exciting market and turned it up on the dull one. A record is a fine thing to notice.
