The Conference Board's consumer confidence index dropped 6.7 points in September to 81.9, well under the reading near 89 that forecasters expected, and the part that measures how people feel about conditions right now turned negative for the first time in a year. In the same survey, more people said they expect the job market to weaken. Underneath the mood, the bond market kept grinding higher. The 30-year Treasury yield pushed past 5.6 percent, a level last seen in 2002, and the 10-year touched about 5.29 percent, its highest since 2007\. Stocks slipped again, and bank shares closed out their worst month since early 2023.![](https://nilxzluobwagqrepqi.b-cdn.net/dfacb10e-d867-46c6-b89d-6890b8c704a2.jpg)A confidence survey measures a feeling, and a feeling is not a balance sheet. I have watched this country feel awful while the economy kept chugging along, and feel wonderful in the last quiet months before real trouble. So I do not move a dollar based on how people tell a pollster they feel. What I do respect is the machinery underneath the mood, because a nervous shopper eventually spends a little less, and less spending can cool hiring, and that is the loop that turns a glum survey into a slower economy. You cannot lift the national mood by yourself. You can make sure your own footing does not rest on it, with income that keeps coming, fixed costs kept low, and cash you will not be forced to spend in a bad month.From WashingtonNext year's Social Security raise is nearly locked inToday is the last day of September, and that matters more than it sounds. The Social Security cost-of-living raise for 2027 is measured off inflation in exactly three months, July through September, so with the quarter closing the figure is all but set. The official announcement comes in mid-October, once the September inflation report lands on the 14th. The current estimates cluster around 3.5 to 3.6 percent, from the Senior Citizens League and AARP.A raise of that size on a typical monthly check is real money, a few hundred dollars over a year. Here is the catch people forget. The same inflation gauge that sets the raise also feeds the Medicare Part B premium that is often deducted right back out of the same check, so the headline increase and the amount that actually reaches the bank are rarely the same figure. I used to tell clients to wait for both numbers, the raise and the new Part B premium, before spending a penny of it. Tesla says more than a thousand of its Optimus robots are now working the line at its Fremont plant, handling parts and pieces of assembly, with over fifty thousand built so far. A competitor, Figure, has passed ten thousand deployments and logged more than 1,250 hours building cars alongside people at a BMW plant in South Carolina. These are machines doing dull, repetitive factory jobs, on real production floors, right now.A robot that handles heavy, boring, repeatable work could lift how much a plant makes per hour, and over years that sort of productivity is part of what keeps prices down and companies solvent. That is the hopeful reading. The one I keep is plainer. The firms selling this future carry towering valuations built on promises of millions of robots that do not exist yet, their shares lurch on a single demo clip, and a thousand robots in one factory is a long way from a business that pays for itself. It swings with gas prices and headlines, it turned gloomy this month, and it will turn again before long. It captures how people feel on the day a pollster reaches them. It says nothing about what your own accounts can actually withstand.Across thirty-five years I watched the same error run in both directions. People turned euphoric near the top and shoveled money in, then turned fearful near the bottom and sold at a loss, each time letting a feeling do the job a plain spreadsheet should have done. The feeling is real enough. It just makes a poor advisor. Your own figures, what comes in, what goes out, how many months your cash would last if the income stopped, do not care whether the country is hopeful or scared this quarter. Build the plan around those, and a grim confidence report becomes something you read over coffee and then put down.
