It matters because spending by regular people is close to two-thirds of the whole economy, and the first crack showed on Friday. Home Depot reports Tuesday, Target on Wednesday, and Walmart on Thursday, and between them they touch nearly every wallet in the country. The question underneath all three is the same: are people simply pausing after a long summer of spending, or finally pulling back because prices wore them down? I will be reading the words as closely as the numbers, because a cautious shopper cools inflation, which is welcome, and cools growth, which is not.From WashingtonThe Fed shows its cards, quietly, on WednesdayThere is no rate meeting this week, but there is the next best thing for anyone trying to read the Fed's mood. July was the first month in a while when the crowd blinked. One month is not a trend, and a single soft report can reverse next time. But it is worth noticing when the thing everyone assumed was unstoppable takes a breath.I have sat on both sides of this. In my old shop I watched clients ride a good year too hard and then scramble when the work slowed, and I watched quieter ones set aside the good months so the lean ones did not frighten them. A spending pullback, if that is what this is, hurts the stores this week and helps some of those same households by fall, when the card balance is smaller than it would have been. The economy will read July as a warning.
